Wire-to-Wire Win Gives Ladies Basketball Big Season Sweep of Schreiner

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Ladies still sit a half-game out for the final spot in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference 2018 Basketball Tournament, but the Maroon and White picked up a pivotal tie-breaker and season sweep.

The Ladies made a basket 2:05 into the game and never trailed as Centenary (5-14, 3-6 SCAC) completed the season sweep of Schreiner (5-14, 3-5 SCAC) with a 64-52 win Sunday afternoon, January 28.

Junior Savanah Doty also tied a Centenary single-game record with seven blocks, originally set by assistant coach Brianna Edwards twice during the 2015-16 season. It is also the 14th most blocks in a single game in NCAA Division III this season and tied for the most by a guard. It was also the most by a SCAC player in 2017-18.

Leading 13-12 in the final seconds of the first quarter, junior Jasmine Morris made a fastbreak layup while being fouled. She made the ensuing free throw to give Centenary a four-point lead after the first. To begin the second, freshman Kayla King grabbed a steal and side-stepped defenders for the fastbreak layup. King hit another layup to punctuate the seven-point spurt for Centenary. Schreiner split from the line, but a jumper and layup by freshman Bre Frierson gave the Ladies their first double-digit lead of the game.

Schreiner cut the lead to five late in the second quarter, when sophomore Deunya Small hit a jumper and layup. The Mountaineers again split from the line, but a freshman Darelzray Bellard hit a triple with the clock winding down in the first half gave Centenary a double-digit lead for good.

Centenary dominated Schreiner on points in the paint, 44-22, and used a 44-33 edge on the boards. Five Centenary players reached double-digit scoring for the first time in more than a year, led by freshman Haylee Washington’s first career double-double (12 points and 12 rebounds). Small and Frierson came off the bench for 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Morris and King both scored 10.

Leading 43-32 in the third quarter, eight unanswered gave the Ladies their largest lead of the game. Morris and Small made layups, followed by two from the line from Morris. Frierson ended the spurt with a putback off an offensive rebound.

After Schriener fell behind 26-15 in the second quarter, the Mountaineers scored six straight. Kendall Dyal and Kendra Brown hit jumpers and Caitlyn Latson hit a fastbreak layup.

Brown led Schreiner with 15 points while Latson came off the bench for 12.

Centenary steps out of conference play for the final time this season Tuesday when it travels to Dallas Christian. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
